If you're considering changing your drinking, you'll need to decide whether to cut down or to quit. It's a good idea to discuss different options with a doctor, a friend, a family member or someone else you trust.
Quitting is strongly advised if you....
- try cutting down but cannot stay within the limits you set
- have some kind of condition that is caused or worsened by drinking
- are taking a medication that interacts with alcohol
- are or may become pregnant
Treatments:
Medications:
Drugs can help relieve some of the symptoms of withdrawal (after you start drinking for a long period of time your body gets used to it and you being missing it) and it can help prevent it from relapse (drinking heavily again). The doctor may give you a medication to reduce your cravings for alcohol.
Medications used to treat alcoholism and to try to stop drinking include:

Naltrexone (ReVia)- Blocks the high you get that makes you crave alcohol
Disulfiram (Antabuse)-makes you very sick if you drink alcohol
Acamprosate (Campral)-reduces your craving for alcohol
Therapy & Education
Therapy helps you to see and learn all of alcohol's dangers. Education raises awareness of the issues and lifestyles that promote drinking. In therapy, you work to make coping skills better and learn other ways of dealing with stress or pain.
